In this part we are ging to give you the basic facts about Edinburgh, and quiz you about the information we gave in previous posts.

8. The historic centre of Edinburgh is divided in two by  Princes Street Gardens. To the south the view is dominated by Edinburgh Castle, built high on the castle rock, and the long sweep of the Old Town descending towards Holyrood Palace. To the north lie Princes Street and the New Town.

9. Arthur's Seat is the main peak of the group of hills in Edinburgh, Scotland which form most of Holyrood Park, described by Robert Louis Stevenson as "a hill for magnitude, a mountain in virtue of its bold design". The hill is the highest pint of Edinburgh, and rises above the city
 to a height of 250.5 m (822 ft).

Arthur’s Seat, the distinctive volcanic hill that rises up beyond Edinburgh’s Old Town, is a place steeped in history and mystery. Vaunted as a possible site for King Arthur’s fabled Camelot and home to the Celtic Votadini tribe in 400AD, over the centuries it’s been the scene of a medieval miracle, an 18th-century murder and a fictional encounter with the Devil.

But its strangest story began in June 1836, when a group of boys out rabbiting on the north-east side of the hill made a bizarre discovery: 17 ‘Lilliputian coffins’, concealed in a recess in the rock.

10. The Edinburgh International Festival is an annual festival of performing arts in Edinburgh, Scotland, over three weeks in August.

11. The IATA designation code for Edinburgh Airport is EDI.

12. A department store that has been located on Princes street since 1838 is called Jenners.
Please do not confuse it with London's Harrods!

13. Castle Rock is a volcanic plug in the middle of Edinburgh upon which Edinburgh Castle sits. 

14. The Kirk of the Canongate, or Canongate Kirk, serves the Parish of Canongate in Edinburgh's Old Town, in Scotland. It is a congregation of the Church of Scotland.


15. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe are both elements of Edinburgh Festival.

16. A participatory arts event held on April 30th on Calton Hill,  inspired by an ancient ancient Gaelic festival is called  Beltane Fire Festival.

 17. The Old Town consisted originally of the Royal Mile, and the small alleyways and courtyards that led off it to the north and south. These were usually named after a memorable occupant of one of the apartments reached by the common entrance. Generically such an alleyway is termed a close /ˈkls/, a Scots term for alleyway.A close is private property, hence gated and closed to the public.


  18. A famous tourist attraction is Real Mary King's Close. Here you can  discover for yourself Edinburgh’s deepest secret; a warren of hidden streets frozen in time since the 17th Century.
